Imagine being a newborn chick, freshly hatched and your predator is awaiting you the moment you leave the security of your shell. Almost a month has passed, and you don’t know what world awaits you, naive but eager for life. There are beasts ravenous, and prowling plotting your demise, but you are none the wiser. A mongoose is brutal, and slaughters full grown chickens and will steal the eggs and crack them on rocks. In life we don’t always get the chance to leave our shell, we fall before we even got a chance to rise. The ones that do grow, often live on to be destroyed by the ways of the world. A Goose can serve as a sentry to ward off predators such as mongoose and foxes. They are bold, feisty, and loud birds so even if they don’t chase the creatures away, they can bring awareness to the farmer to defend their flock. Spiritually, the Holy Spirit is like that goose, guarding us and warning us of things to come. John 16:13 reveals that – “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” This declaration assures we are never alone, and that the Great I Am always having a watchful eye on us.
The question is are you a farmer, a chicken, or a mongoose? The farmers tend to the farmstead as a pastor would lead the church, the chickens are living in the coop or free-range on the farmstead (this could represent the saved and the lost), and the mongoose are hungry for destruction just waiting for the farmer to let their guard down, deception and pain manifested in people. Leaders don’t always guide their followers down the right paths, but there are those that do but they don’t always have the right knowledge to overcome an obstacle or prevent something they could change. That is why it is so vital to trust in the Lord with all your heart. Isaiah 33:6 – “Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, And the strength of salvation; The fear of the Lord is His treasure.” His wisdom will get you through anything and God’s wisdom is to be valued as stated in Proverbs 16:16 – “How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.”
The Holy Spirit is within us, conditioning us through our trials and tribulations, coaching us, correcting us, and empowering us. But he also can warn us through convictions and prophecy. He is bold, he is like a fire in your spirit, and he is not afraid to offend because the truth can hurt. We all need a goose in our lives for us to be bold, to be loud, to be unmoved. So, we can do more than just survive, we can thrive!
If you have a goose, you can count your chickens before they hatch, because you know you will be blessed. You know God will provide and protect you.
